Frequently asked questions
Common questions about FORMDRILL from 3G Electric.
What materials can FORMDRILL friction drill bits work with?
FORMDRILL friction drill bits are designed for use on ductile materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and certain alloys. The process relies on the material's ability to plasticize and form a bushing under friction heat. Materials with low ductility, such as cast iron or hardened steel, are not suitable. The FORMDRILL FDKSO lubricant is recommended for stainless steel and steel to reduce friction and extend tool life.
How do I select the correct FORMDRILL drill bit size for a specific thread?
FORMDRILL drill bits are specified by the thread size and type (e.g., UNC, UNF, NPT, metric) and the corresponding drill size in millimeters. For example, the FD1170SF is for 1/2"-13 UNC threads with an 11.7 mm drill size. The drill size determines the inner diameter of the bushing formed, which is then tapped to the required thread. Refer to the manufacturer's part number and specifications to match the drill bit to the desired thread.
What is the difference between flat-finish and collar-forming FORMDRILL drill bits?
Flat-finish FORMDRILL drill bits, such as the FD1170SF, produce a bushing that is flush with the workpiece surface, suitable for applications where a protruding collar is undesirable. Collar-forming bits, like the FD0490L, create a raised collar or bushing that provides additional thread engagement and strength. The choice depends on the application requirements: flat-finish for clearance or aesthetic reasons, collar-forming for maximum thread depth and load capacity.
Can FORMDRILL friction drill bits be used on coated or painted surfaces?
FORMDRILL friction drill bits can be used on coated or painted surfaces, but the coating may burn or degrade during the friction process due to high localized temperatures. For best results, the surface should be clean and free of heavy coatings. If the coating is critical, test on a sample piece first. The process does not generate chips, so there is no risk of coating delamination from cutting forces.
What maintenance is required for FORMDRILL toolholders and drill bits?
FORMDRILL drill bits should be inspected for wear after each use, particularly the tip geometry and bushing-forming area. Re-sharpening is not recommended; replace worn bits. The FDKSO lubricant should be applied to the bit and workpiece interface to reduce heat and wear. Toolholders should be kept clean and free of debris. Store bits in a dry environment to prevent corrosion.
